Head of Compliance
Role Overview
To ensure the organisation is following local, national government and international regulations with respect to shipping operations, health and safety in general, safeguarding the organisation integrity and reputation within legal and regulatory parameters.
Key responsibilities will include compliance oversight, policy development and implementation, risk assessment and mitigation, reporting & documentation, team leadership and stakeholder communication.
Our aim is to ensure safety at sea, prevention of human injury or loss of life, and avoidance of damage to the environment, in particular, to the marine environment and to property.
Main Duties/ Responsibilities
Performing routine risk assessments to help the organisation understand compliance risk, scope and significance
Monitoring the organisation’s compliance with regulations and internal policies to ensure they are up to date with the relevant laws
Educating employees on compliance regulations and the impact of non-compliance on the organisation
Recording their findings properly and following up with management to ensure the issues are rectified
Reviewing marketing materials, websites and presentations to ensure compliance with regulations
Assisting in the gathering of information internally in response to requests by regulatory organisations
Oversight of quality management systems with respect to The International Safety Management Code (ISM Code) and ISO standards 9001. 14001 and 45001
Plan and manage internal audit reviews and renewal audits.
To uphold, develop, promote and enforce high standards of marine safety,
Maintain a high level of technical knowledge in specified technical areas. In particular, new regulations and policy.
Carry out vessel audits and internal audits.
As per the ISM Code deputise for the Designated Person.
Essential criteria
One or more of the following:
HSE qualification, such as NEBOSH Diploma or NEBOSH Masters qualification
MCA STCW III/2 Chief Engineer unlimited Certificate of Competency;
MCA STCW II/2 Master Unlimited Certificate of Competency;
FV Class I Certificate with extensive Class 1 seagoing fishing vessel experience together with a track record of shore management or survey experience of fishing vessels.
Honours Degree in Naval Architecture, Ship Science, Marine Engineering, Mechanical and Marine Engineering or Marine Technology. Applicants without these qualifications would be considered if they were Chartered Engineer (C. Eng) through Royal Institution of Naval Architects (RINA) or the Institute of Marine Engineers (IMarEST).

Good communication skills are essential to be able to present technical issues to others, liaise with clients and work well within the Offshore team.
Resilient, adaptable and flexible to adjust to an ever-changing environment and to handle stresses and pressures with the ability to perform in demanding situations.
Ability to work successfully as part of a team in a busy office environment and independently when required.
Must be able to undertake peer instruction and knowledge transfer from current Head of Compliance in line with company succession planning and procedures.
Basic competence to participate in the verification of compliance with the requirements of the ISM Code demonstrate adequate competence and skills for performing verification of compliance with the requirements of the ISM Code, particularly regarding:
a) knowledge and understanding of the ISM Code;
b) mandatory rules and regulations;
c) the terms of reference which the ISM Code requires that Companies should take into account;
d) assessment techniques of examining, questioning, evaluating and reporting;
e) technical or operational aspects of safety management;
f) basic knowledge of shipping and shipboard operations; and
g) participation in at least one marine related management system audit.
Knowledge of risk structure, roles and resources
Highly proficient in the use of Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel
Desirable criteria/ attributes
Knowledge or experience within the maritime industry specifically with an HSE background.
Keen to learn from others and build a knowledge-sharing culture within the wider team.
Demonstrate leadership skills
