Kilkeel trawler breaks own record catch

From the Mourne Observer, Friday 3rd February 1967

On Friday last the trawler Croidte an Duin, owned and skippered by Mr Gerry Doyle landed 250 cran of herring at Kilkeel – a record discharge for any vessel at this harbour. But the record was short-lived, for on Wednesday the same trawler broke it by landing no less than 410 cran.

On both occasions the herring were caught in Strangford Lough, the vessel operating a trawl net in company with the Shemariah, owned by Mr David Wilson. Both catches – totalling about 100 ton – were sold for fish meal at £8 per ton.

* £8 in 1967 equates to about £133 in 2017
